Who are the Legionnaires?

American Legion members are VOLUNTEERS, veterans of our United States Armed Forces, working to improve the lives of fellow veterans, and to support and enhance our communities.
Picture
• Here at New Palestine Post 182, there are ~200 veteran and active duty members of our American Legion Post, STILL supporting our veterans and serving as community volunteers here in OUR home town!
• The Sons of the American Legion (SAL) Squadron 182 has ~80 men whose parents and/or grandparents (great grandparents, etc.) are serving or have served, and those sons wish to support ALL our veterans (not just their parents) and our New Palestine community
• Our Auxiliary Unit 182 has ~3 dozen
spouses, daughters & granddaughters of veterans or active duty personnel who have been through their years of service back home, and wish to continue same as volunteers
• American Legion Riders Chapter 182 are ~20 members of
any of the above sharing a common bond of volunteerism AND a thorough enjoyment of the open road on motorcycles

There are Four Pillars of the American Legion, focusing our community service, whether in our town, our state, or nation:
Americanism / Children-Youth / Security / Veterans

"As an organization dedicated to God and country, with a membership of military veterans that takes deep pride in the U.S. flag and all it means, the American Legion has always been a stalwart champion of patriotism, morality and citizenship.
Picture
Upon the pillar of Americanism is The American Legion’s devotion to law and order, the raising of wholesome youth, respectful observance of patriotic holidays and remembrances, education and law-abiding citizenship."

As our nation's symbol, the Flag of the United States of America is worthy of respect, proper display and treatment,
and we members of Post 182 do our best to educate and promote by example, presenting flags at special events, as gifts to new businesses opening in New Palestine, and marking veteran gravestones on Memorial Day.
We participate in U.S. holidays that celebrate and remember service men & women
and first responders, past and present.

We are New Pal Proud of our area scout troops, and the number of Eagle Scout projects Post 182 supports - community welcome signs to nature preserve enhancements to disc golf along the mile long walking trail in our township park and so much more (for decades!).

Our Legion Post 182 AND Sons Squadron 182 are annual sponsors / supporters of our Southern Hancock Education Foundation's fund raising Auction Gala (every year since the event's founding in 2012).
Our event sponsor-ship provides student, classroom,  and teacher support, high school scholar-ships & more!
The National Oratorical competitions, poetry contests, Hoosier Boys & Girls State, youth shooting clubs, flag essays, student music & athletic department support, scholarships, more!
The American Legion Children's Welfare Foundation seeks to provide for children whose families cannot, whether due to special needs, financial circumstances, even homelessness. The CWF reaches out to and through childrens' homes and other not-for-profit outreach programs.

Foundation management and fund raising responsibilities have been provided by volunteer members of the Sons of the American Legion (SAL) for many years.

As veterans, we are concerned that our Active Duty personnel are properly trained, supported, equipped and cared for. We work to ensure that our men and women are receiving the best we can offer, as they, in turn, serve and protect us all.
They wrote the check, to you and I, fellow citizens of this country, payable in the amount up to and including, their lives. Having written that same blank check, our member veterans want to ensure our active duty folks get the quality support they deserve - Protect Those Who Protect Us.
We also wish to ensure those who are recovering from injuries receive the FULL support and care they need. There are necessaries for our wounded that don't show up on any budget line item, one of the reasons the American Legion established Operation Comfort Warrior. OCW volunteers network with military hospitals here and abroad, generating wish lists of items needed by recovering warriors - some items are very specific, many are more general - we endeavor to provide them ALL!

Here at New Pal 182, we support area veterans with some times general, other times very specific needs - like the vet who needed a SuperWheelChair (one with tank tracks to get out to the horse barn, through the woods for hunting or his favorite fishing hole,etc.).
We celebrate special veteran anniversaries, make significant donations to state Legion veterans programs like I-Vets, help struggling local vets with bills for medications or food or even rent (short term), deliver meals to families in need (vets plus civilians), provide flights/transportation to veterans needing special medical treatments, provide Christmas gifts (clothing & toys/games) for struggling veteran families, much more.
For those we can't support directly, our donations to American Legion Indiana Department and National provide American Legion Service Officers to assist veterans in application processes for aid, medical needs, job placement, and so much more. There's NO FEE to use the Officers' services, nor is Legion membership required - just another way for Legionnaires to help their fellow military colleagues, past and present.

Most monthly member/planning meetings (third Thursday evenings at 3525 W US 40 / Greenfield, IN 46140) address numerous veterans, community and philanthropic issues - recently, the meeting agenda included:
* Congratulated our Legion Oratorical contest winner (from NPHS!)
* Saw an AMAZING display of high resolution photos from a WWII bomber’s perspective (local veteran!)

* Approved half a dozen donations to veterans causes AND our local New Palestine community, totaling some $20,000!
* Discussed our participation in community events and projects: current work status on our Veterans Memorial at Sugar Creek Twp Park, and our assistance at the New Palestine Chamber SummerFest (among others)

* Sons Squadron approved their incoming slate of officers, as did the Legion Post.
* updated on cooperative efforts with our landlords/partners, the New Palestine Lions, on property drainage and parking expansion
* Thanked District Commander Laurie for her attendance and kind words to our members
* and more . . .

While, officially, there is no 'Community Pillar' in Legionism, as our member veterans, sons and spouses serve in our communities, there's plenty of volunteer activity going on right here in New Palestine!

Volunteer members of 182 annually lend a BIG hand at the New Palestine Chamber's SummerFestivals (and car shows) - annual Lions Club Fall Festivals, and parades, too!
We've supported our new New Palestine Museum, our high school was among
the first in the state to receive bronze US Constitu-tion Plaques, and we help with the Blue Star Banners adorning the lamp posts downtown
members of our entire Legion family...
Oh, and FUN, too - horseshoe tourna-ments, dinner parties, Christmas gatherings with
We are deeply satisfied when supporting our town, our schools, our people:
we have helped maintain and enhance the New Pal Lions Community Building (with both our labor AND our dollars), donations to local food pantries, PTO's,
youth leagues, families in need, school music and athletics, local horse riding therapy for those who are healing or have special needs, NPHS class reunions, New Palestine Chamber, our Southern Hancock Education Foundation, and the list goes on.
Proud to Belong, Proud to Serve!
For God and Country!

Every WEEK (yes, we are a BUSY batch of volunteers), members of Post, Squadron, Unit & Chapter 182 chip in to help host our Post's BIGGEST (and currently ONLY) fund raiser! see more --->

Many of our gatherings have purpose, some are just for fun - activities & events, too, can be community focused, or for the sheer enjoyment of a deed well done on a beautiful day (to be honest, we also have FUN at the meetings and events that include 'work' )
